Relationships to support the goals
IPB University has direct involvement in, or input into, national government or regional non-government organizations’ SDG policy development – including identifying problems and challenges, developing policies and strategies, modeling likely futures with and without interventions, monitoring and reporting on interventions, and enabling adaptive management. Some IPB Experts’ direct involvement in SDGs policy making are listed below:
- Prof. Indrajaya, professor of Marine Science IPB University has been appointed as the chairman of Compliance Commission of Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) for the period of 2022-2024. IOTC is a regional nongovernment organization that focuses on regulating the use of tuna in the area of the Indian Ocean. It involves 31 countries.
- Three professors of IPB University, including Prof. Rizal Boer, Prof. Dodik Ridho Nurrochmate, and Dr. Irdika Mansur, have been assigned as the experts team of the national committee of Indonesian’ Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 for Controlling Climate Change (page 26). They provide policy recommendation for Indonesian government in formulating strategy and action to enhance Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
- Prof. Arya Hadi Dharmawan is appointed as the member of committee of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) representing academia. ISPO committee has an important role in providing direction in promoting sustainable palm oil practices in Indonesia.
- IPB University Marine Expert, Prof. Luky Adrianto was involved in Indonesia’s Blue Carbon Strategy to Achieve Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Targets and Implementation of Carbon Economic Value (NEK) Workshop. The activity was to unite the vision and mission related to increasing Indonesia’s contribution to world climate change policies from the marine sector. <<See details>>
- Head of the Center for Gender and Children Studies, Bogor Agricultural University, is included as a member in the Sub-Task Force for Gender Equality (SDG 5) in pages 29. Based on the Decree of Ministry of National Development Planning / National Development Planning Agency concerning the Indonesia Expert Team for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals 2020-2024.
- The Centre for Climate Risk and Opportunity Management in Southeast Asia Pacific (CCROM – SEAP) IPB is involved in the Climate Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Task Force (Point E; Research and Innovation Working Group) based on the Decree of the Governor Jakarta No. 209 of 2023.
IPB actively organizes and participates in cross-sectoral dialogue about SDGs, involving various stakeholders, including government and NGOs. Below are several related activities.
STRATEGIC TALKS AND PUBLIC LECTURE
IPB organized a series of strategic talks and public lectures that discuss various topics related to SDGs involving various stakeholders. Some of the activities, are listed below:
- The Directorate of Scientific Publications and Strategic Studies IPB University held the 38th IPB Strategic Talks with the theme “The Strategic Role of Blue Economy in National Economic Development”.
- The Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Sciences (CTSS) IPB University held a Public Lecture on Sustainable Finance, in collaboration with PRAKARSA. This activity discussed the concept of sustainable finance and increased awareness of the importance of economic and ecological reform for a just transition.
INTERNATIONAL SEMINARS/CONFERENCES
Every year, IPB organizes more than 15 international conferences/seminars/symposiums with topics strongly relevant to SDGs. International seminars organized by IPB in 2023 are listed at https://global.ipb.ac.id/international-seminars/). Some of topics in 2023 are below:
- The 3rd International Seminar on Natural Resources and Environmental Management 2023 (3rd ISeNREM) held by the Study Program of Natural Resources and Environmental Management Science (NREMS), Graduate School of IPB University on July 27th – 28th 2023. The theme of this seminar is “Toward a New Era of Natural Resources and Environmental Management”.
- The 4th International Conference on Integrated Coastal Management & Marine Biotechnology (ICMMBT) organized by the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (CCMRC) in collaboration with the GEF/UNDP/PEMSEA and The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The conference focused on promoting creative solutions and practical approaches to coastal and ocean management, taking the theme “Good Practices and Innovations Towards Blue Economy”.
- International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality (ICRTH) 2023. IPB University hosted the International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality (ICRTH) 2023 at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor (21/8/2023). This international conference was a professional conference that discussed the importance of rebuilding sustainable tourism by presenting international speakers from various countries. <<see the details>>
- The 7th International Symposium for Sustainable Landscape Development (The 7th ISSLD) is organized by the Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. The 7th ISSLD aims to examine in-depth various case studies related to efforts to create sustainable landscape development post-the COVID-19 pandemic and utilize technology disruption that impacts the field of Landscape Architecture.
PARTICIPATION AT CROSS-SECTORAL DIALOG ORGANIZED BY GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, NGOs, OR OTHER INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES
- Prof. Dodik R. Nurrochmat participated as a speaker at the Festival of Environment, Climate, Forestry and New Energy (LIKE), Road to Cop 28 UAE 2023 organized by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment.
- The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in collaboration with UNDP Indonesia and the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies, IPB University held a Workshop on Indonesian Blue Carbon Strategy for Achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Target and Implementing the Economic Value of Carbon.
In 2023, IPB actively involve in international research collaboration/consortia to gather and measure data for the SDGs, among others:
- InREEF Project that aims to address the impact of tourism fluctuations, along with climate change, fishing, and pollution, on the ecological integrity, local livelihoods, cohesion, and governance capacities of MPAs. Beginer and Dea Lestari conducted the research on Tourism & Coral reefs. That Research gathered the data focused on marine biodiversity in relation to the resilience of marine protected areas in Indonesia under different gradients of tourism and anthropogenic activities. - SUSTAINPALM – A joint implementation programme between Indonesia and The Netherlands to support sustainable palm oil production in synergy with the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to developing living lab, this project also gather and measure data that support the sustainable palm oil practices. This three years project started on November 2022.
- The FINCAPES project – Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing and Ecosystem Sustainability. The project designed to support Indonesia’s ongoing efforts in adapting and mitigating climate change impact, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring socio-economic sustainability. This project is led by the University of Waterloo collaborating with IPB University as the main partner. Prof. Arif Satria, Rector of IPB University involved in the Inauguration of the project and the signing of MOU was carried out on February 20, 2023 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jakarta. IPB University involved in the climate change adaptation and mitigation strategy project or FINCAPES Project.
- IPB University has collaborated with The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW), for the Development of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and Bio-Bank in order to Overcome Rhino Extinction, during 2022 – 2027
2023 was the second year of collaboration between IPB University and The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW). In 2023, rescue efforts of the Sumatran rhinoceros species entered the IVF process.
On 31 October 2023, the Head of the IPB University ART Team, Dr. drh. Muhammad Agil took samples of the mother rhinoceros “Pahu” egg cells at the Kalimantan Rhino Sanctuary in Kelian, West Kutai, East Kalimantan. In addition, he also took samples of biological, genetic, fibroblast (skin tissue) and blood materials. All samples were processed in the ART and Biobank laboratories in Bogor for the in vitro fertilization process of egg cells/IVF using the Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) technique.
The process of making the “Pahu” embryo was also carried out in collaboration between the SKHB IPB University team, the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) Germany, KLHK, BKSDA East Kalimantan, a team of veterinarians from Way Kambas National Park, ALERT Indonesia, and the Indonesian Rhino Foundation (YABI).
Some of international research collaborations also produced articles published in various internationally reputable journals, among others:
- Semeru volcano, Indonesia: measuring hazard, exposure and response of densely populated neighbourhoods facing persistent volcanic threats
- Investigating drivers of active nitrification in organic horizons of tropical forest soils
- Modeling of Evaporation Rate for Peatland Fire Prevention Using Internet of Things (IoT) System
- Drivers of habitat availability for terrestrial mammals: Unravelling the role of livestock, land conversion and intrinsic traits in the past 50 years
- A socio-psychological approach for understanding and managing bycatch in small-scale fisheries
- Accelerating ocean species discovery and laying the foundations for the future of marine biodiversity research and monitoring
Many IPB researchers and faculty members are actively involved in international research collaborations that are relevant to SDGs. Many internationally reputable publications have been produced from those international research collaboration, and some of them review comparative approaches and develop international best practices on tackling the SDGs, among others:
- A Study on Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) for The Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) Region is conducted to review several important aspects among Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Timor Leste, including regional baselines, priority transboundary issues, governance and institutions. This joint research provides recommendations for the Strategic Action Program for ATS region. IPB University takes a part in this research collaborating with researchers from Australia, PNG and Timor Leste.
- Assessing blue carbon in South and Southeast Asia. The research highlights the potential of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows and mangroves, in South Asia and Southeast Asia as significant natural solutions for climate change mitigation. It aimed to examine carbon storage, sequestration rates, and greenhouse gas emissions within these ecosystems across several countries in the region. Prof. Daniel Murdiyarso is one of the authors of this article.
- Accuracy Analysis of Deep Learning Methods in Breast Cancer Classification: A Structured Review
IPB Researcher, Dr. Toto Haryanto involve international research collaboration focusing on the effectiveness of deep learning (DL) in classifying histopathological breast cancer images. This study systematically reviewed recent research on DL methods, particularly convolutional neural networks and their hybrids, as the leading techniques in this field. By surveying existing DL approaches published up to November 2022, the study aimed to identify and compare advanced methods for improving breast cancer image classification. - Benefit of Asian pigmented rice bioactive compound and its implication in breast cancer: a systematic review. This study aims to systematically review existing literature on the benefit of Asian pigmented rice bioactive compounds and their implication in breast cancer. IPB Researcher, Aditya Nugroho involves in this international collaboration.
- Accelerating ocean species discovery and laying the foundations for the future of marine biodiversity research and monitoring.
Ocean Census is a new Large-Scale Strategic Science Mission aimed at accelerating the discovery and description of marine species. This mission addresses the knowledge gap of the diversity and distribution of marine life whereby an estimated 1 million to 2 million species of marine life between 75% to 90% remain undescribed to date. Dr. Hawis Madduppa was involved in this research collaboration. - Gene–Diet Interactions on Metabolic Disease-Related Outcomes in Southeast Asian Populations: A Systematic Review
IPB Research, Prof. Hardiansyah participated in the International Research Collaboration that conducted systematic review to understand gene–diet interactions affecting the Southeast Asian population’s risk of obesity and diabetes. - Potential use of black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens larvae in chicken feed as a protein replacer: a review
Prof. Anuraga Jayanegara involved in the International Research Collaboration that conducted systematic review to potential black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) in chicken feed as a protein replacer. Due to their high protein, fat, and nutrient content, BSFL presents a viable alternative to soybean and fish meal, offering a cost-effective solution for poultry feed. The review assesses the challenges in poultry nutrition and explores strategies to integrate BSFL as an alternative protein source. - An overview of image-based phenotyping as an adaptive 4.0 technology for studying plant abiotic stress: A bibliometric and literature review
Prof. Bambang Purwoko conducted a systematic review on the evolution of image-based phenotyping for plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, using bibliometric analysis of existing databases. The study focuses on the role of 4.0 technology and machine learning in plant breeding, especially for developing stress-tolerant varieties. It highlights the importance of high-throughput sensors in advancing image-based phenotyping for future applications. - The role of fathers in children’s emotion regulation development: A systematic review
IPB lecturer, Nur Islamiah conducted a systematic review on the role of fathers in children’s emotion regulation (ER) development, analyzing 43 studies. The review highlights evidence supporting the impact of paternal involvement on ER, particularly during infancy and toddlerhood. Findings suggest that many paternal factors influencing ER are similar to those found in studies on maternal influence.

- PKSPL IPB University collaborates with UNDP to organize a High-Level Policy Dialogue to discuss Sustainable Coastal Management and Biotechnology
The Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies of IPB University in collaboration with the GEF/UNDP/PEMSEA Arafura and Timor Seas Ecosystem Action Phase 2 (ATSEA-2) Project, and the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum organized the Fourth International Conference on Integrated Coastal Management and Marine Biotechnology (4th ICMMBT 2023). The 4th ICMMBT international conference carried out the theme “Good Practices and Innovations Towards Blue Carbon” and was held in Bali on 12-13 September 2023. This activity was an advanced discussion to combine the thoughts of experts from the government, private sector, business, institutions, and academia regarding policies and potential actions and solutions for sustainable Coastal Management and Biotechnology in Indonesia. This activity was attended by 153 participants from 13 countries including Timor Leste, Australia, Fiji, Madagascar, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Australia, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and Thailand. - Regional Stakeholders Consultation in Asia: A nature-positive trade for sustainable agriculture supply chains and inclusive development
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development BioTrade Initiative (UNCTAD BioTrade) and the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) with IPB University and Center for Climate and Sustainable Finance University of Indonesia (CCSF UI) organize Regional Stakeholders Consultation in Asia: A nature-positive trade for sustainable agriculture supply chains and inclusive development in Jakarta, Indonesia
Regional Stakeholders Consultation in Asia - IPB University collaborates with the Centre for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) to organize a High-Level Policy Dialogue to discuss the green industry and climate change crisis in the palm oil trade sector
IPB University became one of the organizers of the international consortium of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Trade Hub High-Level Policy Dialogue (4/4). This activity was carried out together with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) and the University of Indonesia to discuss and review the green industry and climate change crisis in the palm oil trade sector. The Trade Hub Consortium is a global consortium led by the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP WCMC) and supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) GCRF. This activity is an advanced discussion to combine the thoughts of experts from the government, private sector, business, institutions, and academia regarding policies and potential actions and solutions for sustainable palm oil trade in Indonesia.
Training Series of TRADE-Hub Indonesia on Sustainability Research
IPB University actively collaborates with NGOs to achieve SDGs through educational programs, research and student volunteering programs.
- The Center for Transdisciplinary Science and Sustainability (CTSS) collaborates with PRAKARSA to organize a public lecture on sustainable finance. Through this collaboration, IPB and PRAKARSA provides education for students on sustainability, particularly for SDG8.
- IPB University collaborates with AISEC Indonesia to provide various voluntary programs. AISEC is an international “youth-run” and led, non-governmental and not-for-profit organization that provides young people with business development internships. The organization focuses on empowering young people to make a progressive social impact.
- The Center for Transdisciplinary Science and Sustainability (CTSS) collaborates with the Samdhana Institute in promoting lessons learnt on traditional food systems and sustainable futures.
- Department of Aquatic Resource Management IPB University collaborates with the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) in implementing international Master’s program in small island management (SPL). This program provides full master scholarships to a number of scholars from countries that are part of the Archipelagic Island State (AIS) such as Fiji, Solomon, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and other countries to study at SPL IPB University.
- IPB collaborates with Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) in conducting research on Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis in the area of Arafuru and Timor Sea, and one of them is in Merauke. This research aims to provide substantial information on gender, governance, socio-economic status, pollution, climate change and Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries Management (EAFM), and identify gaps and data shortfall that need to be provided to support the management of the area. IPB and PEMSEA also collaborate in organizing the Fourth International Conference on Integrated Coastal Management and Marine Biotechnology (4th ICMMBT 2023).

IPB SDGs Report 2023 highlights several activities that address SDG 1, such as university anti-poverty program, low-income student support, IPB Scholarship and Tuition Assistance, International Student Support, Community Anti-Poverty Program, Local Start-Up Financial Assistance, and the involvement of IPB to develop policies addressing poverty at the local, national and international level.

Education for the SDGs
IPB University is strongly committed to offering impactful education centered on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as it aligns with the university’s primary mission to advance science and technology in tropical agriculture, maritime studies, and biosciences. Since 2020, IPB University has implemented a sustainable development-focused curriculum, known as the K-2020 Curriculum, which serves as a major component.
INTEGRATED ACROSS FULL CURRICULUM
Most of the study programs in IPB University are closely related to SDGs, which adopt SDGs-related content in their curriculum.

MANDATORY EDUCATION
IPB University includes community development in the curriculum which is mandatory for all students in the third year for their studies, named as KKN-Tematik (KKNT). Every year IPB University sends the students to many places in Indonesia to learn from the communities and to share and exchange their knowledge with the communities in achieving SDGs. In 2023, IPB sent 3316 students to 383 villages across 6 provinces, who stayed in the community for about three months. IPB provides training for the students before they go to the field. IPB collaborates with the local government in conducting this program.
OPTIONAL EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS
IPB provides various educational channels that are optional for students to enhance their skills and understanding on SDGs, among others:
- Entrepreneurship programs for students to promote students capacity to generate economy and SMEs empowerment
- Leadership training implemented by IPB offers educational programs for students to build their leadership skills as well as their awareness on the importance of SDGs.
IPB University has the mandate to develop science in the fields of agriculture, ocean, and biosciences, which has strong relevance to sustainability and SDGs. IPB through its Graduate School has a master’s and doctoral program in Environment and Natural Resource Management.
BACHELOR PROGRAM

First-year students have been introduced to sustainability-related subjects as part of their Common Core Courses (CCR). It can be seen in the list of courses for first year students. Some of SDGs-related subjects are Innovative Agriculture (page 8), Land in Agriculture – Environment Nexus, Forestry (page 15), and Environmental Ethics (Page 17), Conservation of Environment and Bioresources (Page 17). GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Study Program of Natural Resource and Environmental Management Science (NREMS) is one study programs at IPB that integrates SDGs into its full curriculum of master program.
IPB University actively conducts outreach educational activities for the wider community through various programs under IPB Community Learning Center. These programs reach various community groups, including alumni, local residents and displace people.
- IPB participates in the Humanity Project coordinated by The Council of Rectors for Indonesian State Universities (MRPTNI) by sending students to educate Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia. This program aims to help Indonesian workers in Malaysia who have less access and capacity to bring their children to school.
<<Educate Indonesian Migrant>> - Every year IPB sends more than one thousand students to do community outreach programs for a couple of months through the KKN program. Most of the programs include educational activities for the local community. A few programs to be highlighted are: education on waste sorting at elementary school (SD) level, as well as education on sorting and waste management at the junior high school (SMP) level in Jatilor Village in Central Java, and training on agrisociopreneurship for local community in Bandung Regency.

This program facilitates knowledge and experience sharing from senior alumni who have been successful in their career to fresh graduates.

The IPB Office of Sustainable Campus Development has undertaken two comprehensive surveys to assess student literacy regarding sustainability. The first survey focuses on green lifestyle behaviors, aiming to evaluate students’ knowledge and understanding in key areas such as modes of transportation, waste management, energy consumption, and food waste. The second survey examines students’ knowledge and perceptions of sustainable university policies. This initiative is designed to gauge how informed students are about the sustainability measures implemented by the university and their attitudes towards these policies.
