IPB University has been conducting many programs & activities inside and outside the campus on promoting conservation and sustainable utilisation of the land, including forests and wild land. First, the Department of Forest Resource Conservation & Eco-tourism (KSHE), Faculty of Forestry, IPB University held the 9th Fahutan Talks Series, which discussed and declare the establishment of the Indonesian Conservation Society. It was attended by around 200 conservationists in order to address the challenges of different in opinion on conservation (pro-humans or pro-environment) and the complexity behind environmental management. IPB’s student-organized EKSPEDISI (Expedition) in Tanggamus to explore and promote the socio, economic and environmental aspects of biodiversity. IPB University has also conducted biodiversity monitoring activities annualy at various locations on the Darmaga Campus (page 2-3).

Sustainably farmed food on campus

Rector Decree No.133/2020 (point j, page 2) has ensured that food on campus is sustainably farmed. This direction has been implemented by ATP IPB (Agribusiness and Technology Park) in producing organic vegetables and fruits that have fulfilled Indonesian National Standard on Organic Farming System (SNI 6729-2016) adopted by INOFICE (Indonesian Organic Farming Certification). ATP IPB has been listed as one of the certified operators.

Maintain and extend current ecosystems’ biodiversity

To prevent extinction & maximize the individual function of Sumatran Rhinoceros, IPB has developed an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) application, including examination of reproductive status, genome mapping, collection & freezing of sperm, collection & cryopreservation fibroblast cells, production & freezing of embryos, construction of art & bio-bank laboratory facilities, preparation of embryo transfer recipient parents, & embryo production through the reconstruction of fibroblast cells.

IPB University has developed “EcoSystem”, a smart mobile app to monitor land cover change to ensure responsible land-use arrangements for sustainable development. IPB has also taken an active role to support the protection of one of the important ecosystems located in Batang Toru (North Sumatra). In this ecosystem, the Orangutan was described in 2017 as a new species of great ape: the Tapanuli orangutan by an international research team that includes also IPB scientists.

Education programmes on ecosystems

IPB has several agroedutourism programs provided for the public. Educational programs are available in Biopharmaceutical Medicinal Plant Installation Garden, Insect Garden and Cikabayan Garden, and Sabisa Farm.

IPB also carried out various educational programs on ecosystems for local or national communities. For example, a long-term program by IPB Primate Animal Study Center educates local communities, including primary students, in Cikiruh Wetan, Banten, to conserve their ecosystem. IPB also carried out various online lectures, training, and workshops for easy access to lifelong learning education for local & national communities, such as the Fahutan Talks Series on the topics of Conservation of Orang Utan Tapanuli.

Sustainable management of land for agriculture and tourism

IPB conducts outreach programs in a broad sense, including a wide range of educational programs related to sustainable management of land for agriculture and tourism. Center of Agrarian Studies – IPB conducted an agrarian thinking school to educate young people on sustainable land access and utilization.

IPB established agro-edutorism in campus facilities for education school students and communities. Summer Course on Sustainable Development Goals and Natural Resources was also organized by the Department of Resource and Environmental Economics of the Faculty of Economics and Management. The participants visited the agriculture museum that links the history of agriculture and civilization in the past, present, and future in accordance with the summer course theme namely “Connecting The Past to The Future”.

IPB commits to ensuring good practices for the conservation, restoration, and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems that are associated with them. Academic Senate Regulation No. 36/2020, article 6, points 2-d and 2-e (page 7) stated that IPB has to ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems through its campus operations to minimize ecological footprint to support the goal of climate neutrality.

The policy has been implemented in IPB Gunung Walat University Forest (HPGW). The HPGW conducts tree planting programs involving the active participation of stakeholders (e.d. academia, industry & community). The HPGW has become a model of small-scale forest management that successfully implements a voluntary carbon market, sustainable forest management for non-forest timber products & community-based forest management. As a result, many outreach programs have used the HPGW as ideal learning sites for various pieces of training, workshops, field visits, etc.

Monitoring IUCN and other conservation species

IPB complies with international conventions and national regulations as to monitoring and protecting IUCN red-listed species as well as nationally listed protected species. IPB Campus is friendly habitat for different kinds of tree species under IUCN red-listed species such as Macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica), palahlar (Dipterocarpus spp) (Appendix number 806, page 22), ironwood/Ulin(Eusideroxylon zwageri) Appendix number 813, page 22), etc.

Through Academic Senate Regulation No.36/2020, article 6, point 2F, IPB has to conserve the natural ecosystem on campus (page 7).

IPB’s lecturers, Professor Hadi S. Alikodra & Dr. M. Agilhas have been appointed as Board of Trustees of The Rhino Foundation of Indonesia. This foundation has the vision to ensure continuous living populations of Javan and Sumatran rhinos in safe, sustainable habitats.

Local biodiversity included in planning and development

IPB includes local biodiversity in any planning and development of the campus (pages 87 – 89). New construction has to follow environmental impact assessment (EIA) and IPB has multidisciplinary experts on biodiversity and environments. IPB also clearly stated to include local biodiversity in any planning and development process on campus (point r, page 2).

Alien species impact reduction

IPB University has a policy to reduce the impact of alien species on campus that refers to Regulation of Environment and Forestry Ministry No.P.94/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2016 concerning invasive species. IPB monitors closely several invasive species that are addressed in attachment number 47, Cassia siamea Lmk, page 10, and Psidium guajava Linnaeus, number 86 page 13.

In IPB Green Campus Policy, we clearly stated that our campus must follow environmental regulations on the national level (page 112, section “Peningkatan dan Perlindungan Keanekaragaman Hayati”). In addition, IPB also stated a reduction in invasive species in the Rector’s Decree number 133/IT3/LK/2020, point p, page 2.

Collaboration for shared land ecosystems

IPB University Gunung Walat University Forest co-manages with the local communities on producing non-timber forest products (resin) from pine and agathis plantations in the Sukabumi district.

IPB University Jonggol Teaching Farm in Bogor collaborates with local communities to manage local sheep and oil palm production, while the IPB University teaching farm in Sukamantri, in collaboration with local communities, produces ornamental plants. IPB also shares land in Pasir Sarongge teaching farm with farmers for producing high-land horticulture.

IPB University follows national regulations for water quality standards and guidelines for water discharges, as stated in the Environment and Forestry Ministry Regulation No.P.16/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/4/2019 concerning Water Quality Standard (page 6).

Following the national regulation, IPB develops a Green Campus Policy (page 108, “manajemen sensitif air”) to manage the water on campus. IPB has also implemented ISO 17025 for water quality analysis in the laboratory (e.g. Department of Agroindustrial Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology; PROLING Laboratory at MSP Department, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences) (number 2 and 3).

Policy re: plastic waste reduction

We have the policy to reduce plastic waste on campus through Rector Regulation No. 29/IT3/OT/2020, chapter 2, page 5, Instructions for the implementation of Waste Management in IPB University (page 5, chapter II, “pengurangan sampah”), and the Rector’s Decree number 133/IT3/LK/2020, point n, page 2.

It has been implemented through a contract collaboration with PT. Prasada Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLI) in 2019 on hazardous waste management services in IPB Campus. According to the 2019-2023 IPB Green Campus policy, IPB has committed to managing waste (solid, liquid, and gas) following the principles of environmental and health sciences and obeying the law (pages 123-126).

The reference is Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number: P.55 / Menlhk-Setjen /2015 concerning Procedures for Testing Characteristics of Hazardous and Toxic Waste Material. The mandate for implementing waste disposal has been entitled to the Directorate of Facilities and Infrastructures according to Board of Trustees Decree no. 1/IT3-MWA/OT/2019 article 77, point 3, page 36.
