IPB University supports the ethical sourcing of food and supplies. Since 2020, IPB has issued a policy highlighting the ethical sourcing of food and supplies as stated in Rector’s Decree No. 133/IT3/LK/2020 concerning IPB’s Commitment in Achieving SDGs, specifically on p. 2, point j, “IPB ensure ethical sourcing of food and supplies.“

IPB also has a policy to encourage students, staff, and research centers to ensure ethical sourcing of food and supplies, as stated in Circular Letter No. 24714/2021 (point 5a) concerning sustainable and healthy lifestyles.

IPB also established the Halal Science Center. The Halal Science Center analyzes food for contaminants not compatible with the law of Islam. It researches new food preparation methods and new reagents for detecting such contaminants.

IPB University implemented ethical sourcing of food and supplies in its activities in 2022, including the following:

Policy waste disposal – hazardous materials

IPB University has several policies for the practice of proper and safe waste disposal, including the safe and proper disposal of hazardous waste. This was expressed in Rector’s Decree No. 133/IT3/LK/2020 concerning IPB University’s Commitment to Achieving SDGs (p. 2, point m).

Waste management activities at IPB University start from collecting waste from the work unit to the installation of a temporary shelter (TPS) for hazardous waste at IPB, which is then disposed of or sent to the PT Prasadha Pamunah Industrial Waste Management Company (PPLI), Cileungsi. In the technical framework, IPB University also has Standard Operational Procedures on Hazardous Waste Treatment, which is managed and supervised by the Directorate of General Affairs.

In the technical framework, IPB University also has standard operational procedures and the installation of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) for hazardous waste treatment.

Policy waste disposal – landfill policy

IPB University has established a procedure for measuring waste and calculating how much of it will be recycled and sent to landfills

The university has a policy on waste disposal as written in IPB Regulation No. 29/IT3/OT/2020 (p. 6, Points D and E) concerning Technical Guidelines on Waste Management at IPB University.

IPB University also established Rector’s Decree No. 133/IT3/LK/2020 concerning IPB’s Commitment to Achieving SDGs, specifically mentioning that IPB University follows the principle of reducing waste, reusing, and recycling resources. The amount of waste the university generates is recycled as much as possible, minimizing waste that is sent to the city or municipal landfill sites, as stated in our policy document, namely “Management of Integrated Waste Disposal 2019-2023”.

Policy for minimisation of plastic use

IPB University applies policies about the minimization of plastic. IPB adheres to Rector Decree 133/IT3/LK/2020 to minimize the use of plastic, as stated specifically on p. 2, point n.

IPB also urge our community to reuse bag/eco bag in order to minimize plastic use in daily activities as stated in Circular Letter 17960//IT3/TU/2019 (point 3) and Circular Letter 24714/IT3/HM/M/B/2021 (p. 2 point ii. vi). We also urge each unit to do waste sorting which can be seen in our Sustainability Report 2022 (p. 61).

Policy for minimisation of disposable items

IPB University has established a policy concerning the use of disposable items as stated in Rector’s Decree No. 133/IT3/LK/2020, p. 2, point k, and Circular Letter No. 24714/IT3/HM/M/B/2021 (point 3 (ii)). This policy is enforced in all faculties, schools, research centers, and departments at IPB University.

Disposable policy: extensions to services

Besides the IPB University civitas academia, the minimization of plastics and disposal items is also instructed to multiple outsourced services and the supply chain supporting multiple activities at IPB University. This concern is indicated by several circular letters established by the university for outsourced services and the supply chain to minimize the use of disposal items and plastics.

Since 2020, IPB has mandated each unit to measure the amount of waste generated and recycled through the Rector’s Regulation No. 29/IT3/OT/2020 and Circular Letter No. 22015/LT3/KP/2021 about waste management. IPB also urges each unit to apply the “Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle Waste Hierarchy” and “Zero Waste Policy.”

In addition, IPB provides the waste processing facilities for the campus area, including the calculation of the amount, namely: 1) separate trash according to the type of waste; 2) garbage trucks according to the type of waste; 3) an eco-incinerator; 4) a biodigester; 5) compost; and 6) temporary storage for hazardous waste. Since 2020, IPB has published waste management and the amount of waste generated and recycled across the university, a summary of which can be seen on page 61 of the IPB Sustainability Report.
